KURA Announces 15-Day Nighttime Traffic Disruption on Busy Nairobi Road

The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has notified the public of a 15-day traffic disruption along Ngong Road, scheduled to begin on Monday, March 9, 2026. This scheduled interference is necessary to facilitate the ongoing construction of a flyover near The Junction Mall, a critical node in Nairobi's western transport corridor.

According to the official advisory, the works will focus on a section of the road situated between the Naivasha Road and Kingara Road junctions. The disruption is expected to conclude on Monday, March 23, 2026, after the completion of specific structural tasks

To minimize the impact on daytime commuters, KURA has restricted the partial road closures to nighttime hours. Construction activity will primarily take place between 6:00 pm and 2:00 am, allowing contractors to carry out concreting works on the flyover deck without halting daytime traffic.

During these hours, motorists should expect reduced lane capacity. The authority confirmed that only a single lane will remain operational in each direction along the affected stretch. This measure ensures that essential travel continues while providing a safe working environment for the construction crews on-site.

Specific diversions will be implemented for Karen-bound traffic. Motorists heading toward Karen will be redirected from the Kenya Science Campus entrance to the Nairobi City County Training School entrance. This temporary rerouting is required to clear the section where heavy machinery and materials will be positioned.

For those traveling toward the City Council, the flow will remain on the existing carriageway but under restricted lane usage. KURA has indicated that daytime traffic flow should remain largely unaffected, with two lanes maintained in each direction to accommodate the high volume of vehicles using the route.

The flyover project is part of a broader effort to decongest the Ngong Road corridor, which has long suffered from bottlenecks at the Naivasha Road intersection. Once complete, the four-lane flyover is expected to separate local mall-bound traffic from through-traffic, significantly reducing wait times.

KURA officials have urged motorists to exercise caution when approaching the construction zone. Traffic signage, plastic barriers, and warning lights will be installed to guide road users through the diversions and narrowed sections during the period.

Traffic marshals and police officers will be deployed at both ends of the construction site to manage vehicle flow and assist pedestrians. The authority has expressed regret for the inconvenience caused but maintained that the night-shift schedule is the most effective way to balance project timelines with public mobility.

Motorists are advised to plan their journeys accordingly, particularly those using public service vehicles or private cars during the late evening hours when the transition to single-lane traffic begins.
