Construction of the Kamwangi Modern Market in Kiambu County has reached the final stages, with finishing works underway on the multi-storey facility designed to accommodate local traders.

Construction of the Kamwangi Modern Market in Gatundu North has reached the 80% completion mark, with onsite activity now shifting to final finishes. Work currently in progress at the Kiambu County site includes painting, welding, and the preparation of terrazzo flooring. Structural work on the staircases is continuing with the installation of metalwork and floor screeding.

The project is designed to replace previous informal trading environments that were characterized by overcrowding and poor sanitation. The new structural layout features a basement level dedicated to a cold room, storage facilities, and utility areas. On the ground floor, the design incorporates an administrative block, a tackle office, an ICT hub, and a dedicated room for nursing mothers.

The first floor of the building will house a social hall and kitchen facilities. To address historical water supply challenges in the area, the project includes a significant water storage infrastructure consisting of a 40,000-litre elevated tank and a 50,000-litre underground reservoir.

National government administration structures through the State Department for Interior have provided oversight for the project, coordinating stakeholder engagement and security at the site. The construction phase has provided approximately 150 jobs, primarily involving youth and women from the local community. Once finished, the market aims to provide a regulated and hygienic environment for the traders in Gatundu North.
