Busia Town saw the formal start of works on the new Busia Stadium this week following a groundbreaking ceremony led by President William Ruto. The project, which carries a budget of KSh900 million, is designed to provide the region with a modern sports hub capable of hosting high-level athletic events.

The facility is planned as a 10,000-seater arena, with the government stating that the design will adhere to FIFA standards. During the site visit, the President was joined by local leaders and technical teams to review the architectural models and site plans that will guide the build over the coming months.

Initial site clearing is already underway, with heavy machinery including excavators spotted on-site to begin the earthworks. This phase is critical for establishing the foundation of the stands and the pitch, which requires specific drainage and leveling to meet international football regulations

The investment is part of a broader push by the national government to decentralize sporting facilities, moving beyond the traditional hubs of Nairobi and Eldoret. By establishing a FIFA-compliant pitch in Busia, the ministry hopes to attract national league matches and international friendlies to the border town.

The residents gathered in large numbers to witness the launch, which included a demonstration of the proposed stadium layout. The architectural model displayed at the site shows a tiered seating arrangement and a perimeter design intended to manage large crowds efficiently during match days.
