National government allocates Ksh950 million to transform Kisumu's Moi Stadium into a 10,000-seater modern facility, targeting a strict completion date of December this year for national celebrations.

The national government has committed Ksh. 950 million toward the comprehensive modernization of Moi Stadium in Kisumu. President William Ruto confirmed the funding allocation, stating that the project is scheduled for completion before December this year.

The upgrade aims to transition the decades-old facility into a modern sports hub capable of hosting international events. Speaking during a recent tour of the region, the President noted that the stadium would be the primary venue for this year’s Jamhuri Day celebrations.

Initial demolition and site preparation works are already underway at the 3.77-hectare site. The Ministry of Defence is spearheading the construction to ensure the project meets the accelerated timeline and maintains high structural standards.

Once completed, the new facility will feature a seating capacity of 10,000. The technical specifications for the pitch and the running track are designed to meet international standards set by FIFA, CAF, and World Athletics.

Key components of the construction project include:

Fully roofed pavilions on the Western, Eastern, Northern, and Southern sides.

An eight-lane athletics track with a professional tartan finish.

A football pitch constructed with modern drainage and turf systems.

Specialized mechanical, electrical, and civil works, including perimeter fencing.

Dedicated parking areas and improved access roads to handle high-traffic events.

Local authorities in Kisumu have emphasized the importance of the project for regional sports development. The County Executive for Sports, Beatrice Odongo, previously noted that the upgraded stadium will serve as a vital training and competition ground for Western Kenya.

Beyond the sporting infrastructure, the project is expected to incorporate commercial spaces. Plans discussed by the Ministry of Defence and the County Government include the potential for a sports museum, art galleries, and modern shopping areas within the stadium precinct.

The government has also prioritized local economic participation during the construction phase. Project leads have confirmed that a majority of the labor required for the civil and mechanical works will be sourced from the local community.

The Ksh950 million investment is part of a broader infrastructure push in the lakeside city. The President reiterated that the timely delivery of the stadium is a priority for the administration as it prepares for the upcoming national and regional sporting calendars.

Work on the site continues in shifts to meet the December handover. Contractors are currently focused on the foundation works for the main pavilions following the successful clearance of the old structures.
