Kenya Railways has confirmed that the recent demolition of structures near the Nyayo Stadium railway station is part of a broader redevelopment strategy for the Nairobi Railway City. The state corporation is clearing land to create space for a multi-modal transit hub intended to link various transport systems within the capital.
The clearing of the site, which previously hosted several businesses and informal structures, follows a notice issued to occupants to vacate the railway reserve. Kenya Railways officials stated that the site is critical for the expansion of the metropolitan rail network and the integration of the Bus Rapid Transit system.
The planned facility at Nyayo Stadium will serve as a key node in the Sh30 billion Nairobi Railway City project. This UK-funded initiative aims to regenerate the city center by creating a transit-oriented development that includes commercial spaces, residential units, and improved pedestrian access.
Engineers at the state agency indicated that the project will focus on upgrading existing rail infrastructure to handle higher passenger volumes. The station at Nyayo Stadium is expected to undergo a total redesign to allow for seamless transfers between commuter trains and public service vehicles.
The government maintains that the redevelopment is essential for reducing congestion in the Nairobi Central Business District. While the demolitions disrupted local traders, Kenya Railways noted that the land recovery was necessary to meet the technical requirements of the new master plan.
The project forms part of the wider Nairobi Integrated Urban Development Master Plan. It seeks to modernize the aging rail facilities that have remained largely unchanged for decades. Construction timelines for the new transit hub will be aligned with the phases of the larger Railway City development currently underway.
