Kisumu Unveils State-of-the-Art ATC Tower, Solidifying Kenya's Regional Aviation Hub Status

The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) has completed the construction of the new, highly anticipated Air Traffic Control (ATC) Tower at Kisumu International Airport.

This project marks a significant milestone in Kenya’s push to modernize its aviation infrastructure and bolster its standing as a major gateway in the East African region.

The eight-storey facility is a modern marvel, fully equipped with state-of-the-art ICT, surveillance, and communication systems that adhere to international aviation standards.  

The new ATC tower is engineered to dramatically enhance operational efficiency, safety, and airspace management across the Lake Region. Its advanced technology package provides air traffic controllers with superior, real-time situational awareness, enabling precise and reliable management of increasing air traffic flow into and out of the airport.

This upgrade is critical for Kisumu International Airport, which is already classified as a Class 3 airport, positioning it to effectively handle the complexities of modern flight operations.

The completion of this facility also strengthens the airport's profile as a premier aviation hub for the wider Lake Victoria region, ready to accommodate decades of projected growth.  

Crucially, the tower’s modern capacity is set to facilitate seamless connectivity not only within the Kenyan domestic network but also internationally to neighboring countries such as Uganda, Rwanda, and Burundi.

This improved operational capability is expected to directly support regional trade, boost tourism, and stimulate significant economic growth across the East African Community.

The project aligns directly with the administration of H.E. President William Samoei Ruto, who has consistently demonstrated a commitment to expanding Kenya's aviation capacity through strategic investment in modern infrastructure.
