The national government has allocated KSh1.4 billion toward the completion of Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega County. This funding aims to finalize the facility into a 25,000-seat stadium, which will stand as the largest sports arena in the Western Kenya region. The commitment was confirmed during the FCPA Barasa Governor’s Cup, an event held at the grounds to scout and develop local youth talent.
Construction at Bukhungu is part of a broader infrastructure strategy involving the development of 21 modern stadia across the country. This national program includes the Talanta Sports City Stadium, which is currently scheduled for completion later this year. These projects are intended to provide high-standard facilities for young athletes and professional competitions
In Kakamega specifically, the stadium investment aligns with a wider KSh35 billion development plan. These funds have been earmarked to accelerate local economic growth and improve livelihoods through various sectors. The focus on Bukhungu Stadium specifically addresses the lack of high-capacity sports infrastructure capable of hosting major regional and national events.
The ongoing works will upgrade the stadium to world-class standards, providing a base for training and competitive matches. Once finished, the facility is expected to serve as a primary venue for nurturing football and other sports in a region known for its high interest in athletic competition.
