While these designs may appear contemporary, they often trap pollutants, leading to a phenomenon known as sick building syndrome. This condition causes occupants to experience headaches, fatigue, and respiratory irritation that disappear once they leave the premises.

The reliance on artificial climate control rather than natural ventilation has exacerbated the accumulation of volatile organic compounds. These chemicals are frequently found in common building materials, including paints, adhesives, and synthetic flooring. Without adequate air exchange, these substances reach concentrations that pose long-term risks to the lungs and heart.

Urban planning departments and private developers are under increasing pressure to prioritize human-centric design. This shift involves moving away from the "concrete jungle" approach toward layouts that facilitate cross-ventilation and maximize natural light. Such changes are not merely for comfort, but are essential interventions to reduce the burden on the national healthcare system.

President Ruto has previously emphasized the need for affordable and high-quality housing as a pillar of national development. However, journalists and health experts argue that "quality" must encompass the invisible environment within these homes. If a house is affordable but lacks proper airflow, the long-term cost is transferred to the occupant through medical bills and lost productivity.

The locals in rapidly growing satellite towns are particularly vulnerable. In these areas, developers often bypass stringent ventilation codes to maximize every square inch of rentable space. This leads to cramped apartments where cooking fumes and humidity linger, creating breeding grounds for mold and damp-related illnesses.

Effective change requires a multi-sectoral approach. Architects must be held to higher standards during the drawing phase, and building inspectors must treat ventilation with the same gravity as fire safety or structural reinforcement. The integration of green spaces and air-purifying vegetation within building footprints is one proposed solution to mitigate the high CO2 levels found in crowded offices.

Public health is intrinsically linked to the built environment. As the country continues its infrastructure boom, the focus must broaden from simply housing the population to ensuring that the spaces provided do not become sources of chronic illness. Addressing these "hidden" factors is the next frontier for the Kenyan construction industry.
