The bustling heart of Nairobi’s infrastructure corridor along Langata Road recently became the canvas for a profound social statement as The Authority joined the Embassy of Spain in Kenya for the unveiling of a powerful public mural.
Located on the Langata Road overpass near T-Mall, the artwork forms a central part of the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign, repurposing a key piece of engineering for civic advocacy.
The T-Mall Flyover, a landmark project constructed under a public-private partnership between the Kenyan and Spanish governments, was primarily designed to mitigate severe traffic congestion on one of the capital's busiest arteries.
This Ksh 3 billion project, completed by the Spanish engineering firm Centunion, has since become an emblem of Nairobi’s modern infrastructural ambition.
While its elevated carriage ways serve commuters headed toward Ongata Rongai and Magadi, the often-overlooked spaces beneath the overpass have rapidly evolved into vibrant communal areas, frequented by pedestrians, vendors, and public transport users.
It is this very transformation of the urban landscape that underpinned the mural initiative. The Kenya Urban Roads Authority, referred to here as The Authority, collaborated closely with the Embassy of Spain to leverage this highly visible concrete structure.
This fusion of utility and social purpose highlights a growing trend where public infrastructure is recognized not just for its function in movement, but also as a platform for cultural dialogue.
The creation of the mural involved renowned Kenyan artists Chela Chelwek and Bhupi Jethwa, known artistically as Wise Two, both celebrated voices in the contemporary Kenyan art scene whose works embody a socially conscious and feminist spirit.
The mural stands as a permanent, vibrant reminder to thousands of daily commuters and pedestrians that the fight against GBV is not confined to closed forums, but is a necessary, highly visible public priority, permanently etched into the concrete landscape of Nairobi.
