Construction of 425-Unit Affordable Housing Advances at Thika Depot

Construction of the Thika Depot Affordable Housing Project in Kiambu County is nearing completion as the government moves to address the housing deficit within the Nairobi Metropolitan Area. The development is one of four active affordable housing sites in Thika town and is designed to provide high-density residential options for the industrial hub's growing population.

The project features four distinct residential blocks of varying heights. Block A rises to 12 storeys, while Blocks B1 and B2 both stand at 11 storeys. The final structure, Block C, comprises 10 floors. Together, these buildings will supply a total of 425 housing units. To support the new community, the site layout incorporates integrated amenities including a kindergarten and studio shops, which are intended to serve both residents and the surrounding neighborhood.

Economic impact from the construction phase has been noted through the direct engagement of local labor and materials. Youth and women from the area have secured employment on-site, while the demand for construction inputs has provided a steady market for local transporters, hardware suppliers, and small-scale traders. This localized spending has helped circulate income within the Thika Town Constituency throughout the duration of the works.

Project delivery has been facilitated by a partnership with the State Department for the Interior and National Administration. This collaboration has focused on maintaining a stable operating environment at the depot site, which officials say is critical for ensuring the contractor adheres to the technical timelines. The Thika Depot development forms a central part of the broader ministerial plan to upgrade housing standards in fast-growing satellite towns across Kiambu County.
