The Affordable Housing Programme (AHP) has achieved a significant milestone with the completion of Phase 2 of the Boma Yangu Mukuru Estate in Nairobi.
A final comprehensive inspection was recently carried out by Principal Secretary Charles Hinga of Housing and Urban Development, alongside senior government officials, ahead of the official handover ceremony expected to be presided over by H.E. President William Samoei Ruto.
This development represents a monumental stride in the government’s commitment to providing dignified shelter, transforming what was once a sprawling informal settlement into a modern, integrated urban neighbourhood.
The successful completion of this phase is set to see nearly 4,500 additional families receive keys to their new apartments, providing thousands of city residents with a real chance at homeownership for the very first time.
The Mukuru Met Site, located conveniently in South B off Enterprise Road, is one of the flagship social housing developments under the AHP, designed specifically to cater to low- and middle-income earners, with priority allocation often given to former residents of the informal settlements.
The prices of units, particularly the social housing category, are meticulously structured to ensure accessibility, with studio apartments starting at approximately KES 640,000.
The total scope of the project, which will ultimately deliver over 13,000 units including studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom apartments, reflects global best practices in urban planning.
Furthermore, the estate is equipped with crucial social infrastructure, such as dedicated day care centres, courtyards, extensive green spaces, and attractive landscaping that fosters community interaction and wellness.
The successful progress of projects like Mukuru is critical to the national housing agenda, which aims not only to bridge the annual housing deficit but also to anchor economic growth by linking local MSMEs and artisans to the construction pipeline.
