The Wajir County Aggregation and Industrial Park (CAIP) is nearing completion, marking a significant step in efforts to promote inclusive economic development in northern Kenya. The project aligns with President William Rutoβs Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), which seeks to expand industrial growth and investment opportunities across all regions of the country.
Launched in 2023 through a partnership between the National Government and the Wajir County Government, the project is jointly funded by both levels of government. Its location near major trade routes is expected to strengthen Wajirβs livestock and agro pastoral economy while improving access to markets for local producers and businesses.
The industrial park is part of Kenyaβs broader County Aggregation and Industrial Parks programme involving 34 counties. It also falls under the second phase of the rollout of 16 CAIPs currently under development nationwide. The initiative aims to position counties as centres of industrial production, value addition and employment creation.
In Wajir, the project is expected to transform the livestock sector by encouraging local processing instead of relying mainly on the sale of live animals. Facilities within the park will support meat processing, leather production and dairy handling, creating opportunities for increased earnings and stronger local industries.
The inclusion of modern cold storage systems and warehousing facilities is intended to reduce post harvest losses that have long affected pastoral communities. Improved storage and transportation systems will help preserve products for longer periods, allowing producers to access broader and more competitive markets.
The project is also expected to generate thousands of direct and indirect jobs once fully operational. Employment opportunities are anticipated in processing plants, transport services, maintenance, administration and related support industries. Small businesses supplying goods and services to the park are also likely to benefit.
One of the key objectives of the park is to improve market access for livestock keepers and farmers. Aggregation centres will allow herders to pool and grade livestock and dryland crops before sale. This approach is expected to improve pricing transparency and reduce dependence on brokers and middlemen.
Officials say the project will strengthen incomes across the value chain by giving producers greater bargaining power. Through organized aggregation and direct market access, local communities are expected to benefit from fairer pricing and more stable demand for their products.
The park also includes ready-to-use industrial sheds designed to attract investors and support micro, small and medium-sized enterprises. These facilities are expected to encourage local entrepreneurship while reducing startup costs for businesses interested in processing and manufacturing activities.
Infrastructure development remains a central part of the project. Reliable power systems, independent water supply and specialized cooling facilities are being installed to ensure smooth industrial operations. Improved logistics networks are also expected to enhance the movement of goods within and beyond the county.
President William Ruto has described the CAIPs programme as one of the countryβs most important economic transformation initiatives under the BETA agenda. The programme aims to shift Kenya from a consumption based economy toward a production-focused economy driven by local manufacturing and value addition.
According to government updates, 10 out of the first 18 industrial parks under the programme have already been completed and are ready for investors. Authorities believe the projects will strengthen regional economies while reducing development disparities between counties.
The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration has continued to support implementation of the Wajir CAIP project. The department has coordinated efforts among agencies while helping maintain a secure environment for construction activities and future operations.
Leaders involved in the initiative say the project represents more than infrastructure development. They view it as an opportunity to unlock the economic potential of historically marginalized regions by connecting local producers to industrial systems, investment opportunities and wider national markets.
As construction approaches completion, expectations remain high among residents and investors. The Wajir County Aggregation and Industrial Park is expected to play a major role in shaping the countyβs future economy while contributing to Kenyaβs broader industrialisation and job creation goals.
Would be great to see it operational.
