Engineers enter the final phase of the Ngong Road-Naivasha Road overpass, a project designed to eliminate one of Nairobi's most notorious traffic bottlenecks and restore corridor efficiency.

Work on the Junction Mall Flyover, officially known as the Ngong Road-Naivasha Road overpass, is entering its final stretch. The infrastructure project aims to modernize the capital's road network, matching its status as a leading African city.

Located at the intersection of Ngong, Naivasha, and Kingara Roads, the site sits adjacent to The Junction Mall. For years, this specific junction has served as a persistent bottleneck for motorists traveling between Ngong Town and the city center.

Construction crews are currently focused on key finishing works, including the installation of guard rails and street lighting. Critical safety features are being fitted as the contractor moves through the remaining structural and ancillary tasks.

Government officials expect the project to reach full completion within the next two months. Unlike older concrete structures in Nairobi, this overpass uses a modern architectural design featuring aesthetic steel deck girders.

The structure is supported by distinctive V-shaped piers, which provide a slim profile compared to traditional heavy pillars. This design choice allows for more space at the ground level for other transport needs.

Integrated into the design is a robust Non-Motorized Transport (NMT) framework. This includes dedicated cycle lanes and pedestrian walkways, ensuring the flyover serves more than just private vehicle owners.

Improved urban lighting has been factored into the NMT areas to enhance safety for night-time commuters. This focus on inclusivity reflects a shift in how the Ministry of Roads approaches urban mobility.

Projections indicate that the flyover will significantly ease congestion. Travel times from Ngong Town to the CBD, which currently take hours, could drop to approximately 25 minutes.

The project involves coordinated efforts with the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration. Dr. Raymond Omollo noted that this collaboration focuses on enhancing road safety through better traffic management.

Safety enforcement frameworks are being established along this high-traffic junction to protect all users. The goal is to restore efficiency to a vital corridor that has long been plagued by delays.

Under the administration of President Ruto, there has been a renewed push to finish critical infrastructure projects that have faced previous delays. This flyover is seen as a central piece of that regional connectivity plan.

Residents of Dagoretti and surrounding estates have watched the progress closely as the V-shaped piers were erected over the past year. The upcoming opening is expected to revitalize business activities within the nearby shopping complexes.

By separating through-traffic from those turning to Naivasha Road, the flyover removes the conflict points that cause daily gridlock. The result is a smoother flow for both public service vehicles and private motorists.
