President Ruto has commissioned construction of a multimillion shilling market in Nyamira, a facility designed to house hundreds of local vendors and modernize the regional trade infrastructure.

President William Ruto officially initiated the construction of the Ikonge Modern Market in Nyamira County on Monday. This project, valued at KSh70 million, is part of a broader national effort to improve trading environments for small-scale entrepreneurs in rural areas.

During the ceremony, the President laid the foundation stone and engaged with site workers and the residents. He confirmed that the new facility will accommodate 200 traders once construction is finished, providing them with a sheltered environment to conduct their daily business.

The site is currently active with excavation works and initial masonry. Laborers in safety gear are on the ground, and heavy machinery has been deployed to ensure the project moves forward according to the planned schedule.

Nyamira County officials joined the President at the site to oversee the commencement of the works. The market is expected to serve as a central hub for agricultural produce and retail goods, which are vital to the local economy.

The development comes at a time when the government is focusing on grassroots infrastructure to support the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda. By providing modern stalls and sanitation facilities, the government aims to reduce post-harvest losses and improve the dignity of work for local vendors.

Security personnel and local leaders managed a large crowd of residents who gathered to witness the groundbreaking. Many of these citizens rely on informal trade and have been waiting for a structured market space for years.

The KSh70 million budget covers the construction of the main market structure, stalls, and necessary utility connections. This investment reflects the ongoing commitment to decentralize development and ensure that every county receives a portion of the national infrastructure budget.

Construction is expected to provide immediate employment for local youth who have been hired as site workers and artisans. This provides a temporary economic stimulus to the Ikonge area even before the market is open for business.

President Ruto emphasized the importance of completing the project within the stipulated timelines. He noted that the facility is not just a building, but a tool for economic empowerment for the people of Nyamira.

Engineers on site have already mapped out the layout to maximize the use of the available land. The design incorporates modern ventilation and drainage systems, which are often missing in older, informal trading areas across the region.

As the ceremony concluded, the President addressed the gathered crowd, reiterating his administration's focus on projects that directly impact the livelihoods of ordinary Kenyans. The Ikonge Modern Market stands as a primary example of this targeted infrastructure spending.
