Chinese investors have arrived in Uasin Gishu County for a six-day investment mission focused on some of the county biggest projects and potential areas for new partnerships.
The delegation is touring investment opportunities in Eldoret and other parts of the county as local government officials seek to attract fresh capital into the region.
The visit comes ahead of President William Ruto planned official visit to Uasin Gishu later this year, giving the county an opportunity to showcase projects and investment opportunities to potential international partners.
According to Nation, the delegation is being led by Gao Peng, General Manager of the China Road and Bridge Corporation Kenya Office.
The investors are expected to examine projects and opportunities across sectors, with county officials hoping the engagement will progress beyond discussions and result in actual investment commitments.
Uasin Gishu has increasingly positioned itself as an investment and commercial centre in the North Rift, with Eldoret benefiting from its elevation to city status and its role as a major agricultural, logistics and business hub.
The county also has an established history of Chinese investment. Eldoret is home to the Africa Economic Zone, an industrial development that has previously been associated with Chinese investors and manufacturing ambitions.
The wider investment pitch is supported by Eldoret strategic location, with the city serving as a major distribution point for agricultural produce and goods moving between western Kenya, the Rift Valley and other parts of the country.
For the county administration, attracting investors is also about converting existing infrastructure and economic activity into larger industrial opportunities.
The delegation visit could therefore provide an opportunity to discuss manufacturing, logistics, infrastructure and other projects capable of creating employment while expanding the county tax and business base.
The timing is particularly significant because President Ruto political and development profile remains closely connected to Uasin Gishu, his home county.
County officials are consequently seeking to use the upcoming presidential visit and the current investor mission to strengthen the county investment profile.
However, the six-day tour does not automatically translate into confirmed investments. Any eventual projects would still require commercial agreements, financing arrangements, approvals and other due diligence before construction or implementation can begin.
For now, the investor visit represents an opportunity for Uasin Gishu to present its development pipeline directly to potential Chinese partners.
The immediate test will be whether the meetings produce signed agreements and funded projects rather than remaining another round of investment discussions.
