Lang'ata Road Expansion: KURA to Remove Madaraka Roundabout Under Ongoing ITS Project

Civil engineering works along Lang’ata Road aim to resolve persistent vehicular congestion linking southern Nairobi residential estates to the central business district.

Road construction crews are currently undertaking earthworks and site preparations along the corridor stretching from the Nyayo National Stadium roundabout toward the T-Mall overpass.

The project operates under the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) as part of the Nairobi Intelligent Transport System (ITS) Establishment and Junction Improvement Project (Phase 1).

Jointly financed by the Export-Import Bank of Korea and the Government of Kenya (GoK) at $61 million (KSh 7.9 billion), it modernizes 25 critical Nairobi corridors. A primary structural modification along the route involves reconfiguring the active intersection at the Madaraka roundabout.

Project documentation and site markings confirm that contractors are phasing out the circular traffic junction to create a continuous road stretch connecting directly toward the T-Mall flyover.

Lang’ata Road functions as a vital arterial link for suburban commuters traveling from Karen, Kibra, South C, and Lang’ata. Heavy peak-hour traffic volumes frequently create gridlock at existing roundabouts along the route, extending commuting delays across connecting suburban arteries.

On-site construction activities visible along the main stretch include excavation along the median strip, installation of green safety netting, and drainage channel works near the Ngong River crossing. These preliminary earthworks prepare the existing corridor for eventual road surface adjustments.

Project supervision is managed by Cheil Engineering Co. Ltd. as the supervision consultant. The main contract was awarded to the Samsung C&T Corporation Consortium, with China Railway 21st Bureau Group (Kenya) Co. Ltd. executing works as the sub-contractor on the ground.
