The transformation of Kamukunji Grounds into Kamukunji Recreation Park is advancing in Nairobi. The project retains the siteβs historic character while adding facilities for everyday community use.
The grounds hold strong symbolic value. They hosted the 1990 Saba Saba rally, a key event in Kenyaβs shift toward multi-party democracy. The upgrade keeps this legacy visible while serving present needs.

An 11-a-side football pitch and a smaller 7-a-side field form part of the works. Basketball courts and a boxing ring are being added to support organised sport and informal youth activities.

A new community centre is taking shape. It will house a library, an IT lab and a recording studio. These spaces aim to support learning, digital access and local creative work.
An amphitheatre is under construction for larger gatherings. It will allow public events, performances and meetings to take place in a dedicated open setting within the park.

Landscaped gardens and childrenβs play areas are being introduced as green and family-oriented zones. Paved walkways will connect different sections and improve movement for visitors of all ages.
Solar lighting is being fitted across open spaces. The system is expected to extend safe use of the park into evening hours without relying on grid power for illumination.

Drainage improvements and retaining walls are being installed to manage water flow more effectively. These measures form part of the Nairobi Rivers regeneration programme aimed at reducing flooding in the area.

The changes are already beginning to alter how residents interact with the space. The park is intended to function as a shared venue for sport, culture and social activities in a densely populated neighbourhood.
Management responsibility will rest with the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration. The arrangement is set to provide coordinated oversight, security arrangements and routine maintenance of the facilities.

The site continues to stand as protected national heritage. At the same time it is being developed to operate as an active public park available for regular community use.
The upgrade adds structured recreation options in an area that previously lacked such organised public infrastructure. Residents are gaining better access to multiple activities in one location.
