Uasin Gishu Matharu ESP Market ready for official handover

The construction of the Matharu Economic Stimulus Programme (ESP) market in Uasin Gishu County has been completed. Officials confirmed that the structure is now awaiting an official handover ceremony to allow local traders to occupy the facility.

Groundbreaking for the site took place in May 2024. The development forms part of a broader government effort aimed at modernizing commercial space for small-scale traders across various counties.

Located within Kesses Constituency, the facility represents a localized push to provide structured infrastructure for informal businesses.

The completed facility features enclosed trading stalls designed to safeguard vendors and their agricultural produce from unfavorable weather conditions.

Modern sanitation facilities, secure perimeter boundaries, and dedicated storage units have also been integrated into the completed floor plan. These features address long-standing challenges that micro-enterprises face when operating in open-air setups.

Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration, Dr. Raymond Omollo, highlighted the completion of the project through an update on social media. He noted that the project will soon transition into active operational status following final administrative procedures.

The initiative operates under the national government market modernization framework. Under this initiative, several similar markets are being rolled out nationwide to boost economic activities within rural and peri-urban centers.

Local leaders in Uasin Gishu County are expected to announce the final handover date in coordination with national government officials.

Once opened, the facility will accommodate dozens of local vendors who previously traded along roadside verges and open grounds. The improved physical infrastructure aims to streamline logistics and enhance hygiene standards for fresh food supply chains in the region.
