Principal Secretary for Defence Dr Patrick Mariru made a second stop on his work tour at Gusii Stadium in Kisii County, where he witnessed the start of upgrading and construction works at the facility.
The project forms part of the governmentβs broader programme to modernise sports infrastructure across the country. Upon completion, Gusii Stadium will be transformed into a modern 14,000-seater facility featuring a canopy, a standard running track, modern changing rooms and other essential amenities.
Initial activities at the site last month included mobilisation and demolition of existing steel structures. That phase is now completed. The designs are also in place, paving the way for the next phase of construction.
The upgraded Gusii Stadium is expected to significantly enhance sports development in the region by providing a modern facility capable of hosting regional, national and international sporting events. It will create greater opportunities for athletes, nurture talent and contribute to the growth of sports and related activities in Kisii County and the wider region.
Present during the inspection were Kisii County Commissioner James Kamau and County Government of Kisii Deputy Governor Hon Elijah Julius Obebo. Their presence underscored the joint interest of national and county levels of government in the project.
The move from demolition and mobilisation to the main construction phase marks an important transition. With designs finalised, contractors can proceed with the structural and finishing works required to deliver the 14,000-seat capacity.
A canopy will provide weather protection for spectators, while the standard running track will allow the stadium to host athletics events in addition to football and other sports. Modern changing rooms address long-standing shortcomings in athlete facilities.
The broader sports infrastructure programme aims to raise the standard of venues available for both domestic competitions and international fixtures. Gusii Stadium is one of the facilities selected for upgrading under that programme.
Once complete, the stadium is expected to serve as a focal point for sports development in the Gusii region. Local athletes will gain access to better training and competition conditions, while the venue can attract larger events.
Coordination between the national government, represented by the Principal Secretary, and the county government is presented as important for smooth implementation. The attendance of both the County Commissioner and the Deputy Governor reflects that collaboration.
Demolition of the old steel structures cleared the way for the new design. The fact that this work is already finished allows the project to move directly into construction without further delay on that front.
The 14,000-seater capacity positions the stadium at a level suitable for significant regional and national events. Supporting amenities will determine how effectively the venue can operate on a day-to-day basis.
Sports officials and local leaders have long called for improved facilities in Kisii. The current upgrade responds to that demand by delivering a comprehensive modernisation rather than limited repairs.
Progress will now depend on the pace of the main construction works. With designs approved and the site prepared, the next stages can focus on building the stands, track and ancillary facilities.
