Principal Secretary Patrick Mariru inspects works on the constituent college of Kisii University, due for handover by December.

Principal Secretary for Defence Dr Patrick Mariru inspected ongoing construction works at Nyamira University College in Kiabonyoru, Nyamira County, on Thursday. He was joined by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of Administration, Planning and Finance at Kisii University, Professor Nathan Oyaro.

The project officially commenced in January 2026 and is being implemented under the technical supervision of the Ministry of Defence. It has now attained a 35 percent level of completion, reflecting steady progress on the ground.

The project will be complete and ready for handover by December this year. Ongoing works include the construction of a modern tuition block and lecture halls, a dedicated library facility, the main entrance gate and an external ablution block.

Upon completion, the institution is expected to admit its first cohort of students. This will further expand access to quality and affordable higher education for the people of the region and Kenya.

Nyamira University College will mark a significant milestone in the expansion of higher education in the region and the country. It is expected to create opportunities for skills development, innovation and socio-economic transformation.

Officials remain confident that the landmark project will be delivered to the highest standards and within the stipulated timeframe. It contributes to the government’s broader commitment to expanding access to quality education and investing in critical public infrastructure across the country.

The college is a constituent of Kisii University. Its development addresses the need for additional higher education capacity in Nyamira and surrounding areas. The combination of tuition facilities, lecture halls and a dedicated library is intended to support full academic operations once the first students are admitted.

Technical supervision by the Ministry of Defence is presented as a key factor in maintaining progress since the January start. The 35 percent completion mark at this stage of the year places the project on track for the December handover target.

The main entrance gate and external ablution block form part of the supporting infrastructure required for a functional campus. These elements will operate alongside the core academic buildings.

Expansion of higher education facilities remains a priority for improving access in underserved regions. Nyamira University College is positioned as one such investment that will serve both local residents and students from further afield.

The presence of Kisii University’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor during the inspection underscores the institutional link between the new college and its parent university. Coordination between the two is expected to continue as construction advances toward completion.

Steady progress on the tuition block and lecture halls is critical to meeting the December deadline. Library construction will provide the research and study space required for university-level programmes.

The project forms part of wider efforts to decentralise higher education opportunities. By locating a constituent college in Nyamira, the government aims to reduce the need for students from the region to travel long distances for tertiary studies.

Officials expressed confidence in both the quality of works and the timeline. The December handover target remains the stated objective as construction contin
