Kamukunji Police Station is set to become the headquarters of the new Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit. The existing facility will undergo significant redevelopment into a modern security complex.

The upgraded site will feature operational offices, police housing and the Integrated Command and Communication Centre. This centre will support real-time coordination and surveillance across Nairobi City County.

Internal Security Secretary Thomas Saka led a multi-agency technical team during a recent site assessment. Construction work is scheduled to begin in August 2026.

Rapid urban growth and evolving security threats have created the need for this specialised unit. Nairobi faces complex challenges that require better coordination and faster response times. The new setup aims to address these gaps effectively.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen and Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja led benchmarking visits to policing models in New York, London and Tokyo. President William Ruto has received updates on the unit's progress in recent weeks.

Kamukunji's strategic central location makes it suitable for overseeing operations in densely populated neighbourhoods. The station already handles a high volume of daily cases from affray to more serious offences.

The project aligns with ongoing police service reforms aimed at better urban safety. It emphasises community involvement, technology and improved coordination between national and county agencies.

Once complete, the headquarters should enhance rapid response capabilities and public trust in law enforcement. Further details on total project cost and full completion timeline are still under finalisation.

Authorities expect visible improvements in metropolitan security management once the facility becomes operational.
