Kenya Railways has confirmed Tiriitab-Moita in Bureti as the site for the planned Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) station in Kericho County, providing a more specific location for railway infrastructure planned along the Naivasha-Kisumu corridor.
The confirmation was shared in an update by Money Academy, which cited Kenya Railways on the proposed station location. The railway corporation said preparations will involve land acquisition and compensation for affected landowners.
Kenya Railways also indicated that the project will create opportunities for local employment. The statement did not provide details on the number of jobs expected, the categories of workers required or the duration of employment.
Tiriitab-Moita is located in Bureti, an area already identified within the SGR Phase 2B corridor. Kenya Railways' Environmental and Social Impact Assessment for the project identifies Bureti and Soin-Sigowet among the Kericho County sub-counties traversed by the railway alignment.
The ESIA identifies several railway facilities within the Kericho and Nyamira sections of the alignment, including an intermediate station at Sondu, passing stations and future stations. It also identifies a future intermediate station near Bureti Technical Training Institute.
The latest identification of Tiriitab-Moita gives a specific locality for the planned Kericho station, although Kenya Railways' update does not provide further details on the station's design, capacity or the exact extent of land required.
The proposed railway forms part of SGR Phase 2B, which runs from Naivasha to Kisumu. Kenya Railways says the 262-kilometre project, together with an 8.9-kilometre branch to the New Kisumu Port, traverses Narok, Bomet, Kericho, Nyamira and Kisumu counties.
Kenya Railways began preparatory activities for Phase 2B in 2024, including a Resettlement Action Plan study intended to address issues associated with land and property affected by the railway project.
The corporation has since moved the project into construction. Kenya Railways reported in July 2026 that actual construction works on the Naivasha-Kisumu section had commenced, with the contractor laying the first rail and sleepers in Narok on July 1 and July 2.
For communities around Tiriitab-Moita, the immediate issues will include how land acquisition is undertaken, compensation for affected property and access to employment opportunities associated with construction. Kenya Railways has not stated in the cited update when these activities will begin at the proposed station site.
