The Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration, Dr Raymond Omollo, has outlined progress on the upgrade of Migori Stadium in Migori County.
The project forms part of wider government investment in sports infrastructure across the South Nyanza region. Officials aim to nurture athletic talent and support youth development through improved facilities.
Construction is turning the venue into a modern 10,000-seater complex built to standards set by the Confederation of African Football. The upgraded facility will include a professional football pitch, an eight-lane running track, modern changing rooms, a fully equipped gymnasium, a basketball court, VIP lounges and a pavilion.
These elements are intended to support both regional and national sporting events. The design prioritises functionality for professional-level competition and community use.
Beyond the sporting infrastructure, the works are already providing employment opportunities for residents in the surrounding area. Local economic activity has increased as materials and labour are sourced for the site.

The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration continues to play a coordination and oversight role. The focus remains on ensuring the project proceeds smoothly, securely and on schedule.
Migori County lies in a region long recognised for producing top athletic talent. Upgraded county-level facilities like this one are positioned to give young athletes better training and competition environments closer to home.
The pavilion and VIP lounges will help the stadium host larger events with improved spectator amenities. The gymnasium and basketball court extend the venueβs use beyond football to other sports.
Project implementers have emphasised that the facility will serve both Kenyan athletes and visiting teams. Once complete, it is expected to reduce the need for local clubs and schools to travel long distances for quality training grounds.
Oversight from the State Department includes monitoring security arrangements during construction and future operations. This approach seeks to protect workers, equipment and the surrounding community throughout the build phase.
Photos shared alongside the update show sections of the site with structural works visible. New seating areas, pitch preparation and track alignment appear in various stages of progress.
The broader push for sports infrastructure in South Nyanza reflects efforts to spread development benefits more evenly across counties. Similar projects in other regions have aimed at the same goals of talent nurturing and economic stimulation through construction and events.
Local contractors and suppliers stand to benefit as the project moves through its current phase. Employment during construction provides immediate income while the finished facility is projected to support ongoing jobs in operations, maintenance and event management.
Officials have framed the Migori upgrade as one piece of a larger strategy. The emphasis lies on practical delivery of modern sports venues that meet international benchmarks without requiring athletes to relocate to Nairobi or other major centres.
Work continues under the coordination of national and county teams. The target remains delivery of a facility capable of hosting professional matches and community programmes once all components are in place.
