Sections between USIU-Africa gates and Two Rivers Mall will be shut from 6:30am to noon to ensure safety during the annual event.

Motorists in Nairobi face temporary disruption on the Northern Bypass this Sunday. Sections of the busy highway will be closed for six hours to host the USIU-Africa Half Marathon. The closure affects the stretch from USIU-Africa Gates C and D to Two Rivers Mall between 6:30am and noon.

United States International University-Africa issued the advisory to ensure safety for runners, motorists, and other road users. The university urged drivers to plan journeys, use alternative routes, and allow extra time. Traffic marshals will be deployed at key junctions to manage flow and guide diversions.

The marathon route includes the Northern Bypass passing through Mirema Overpass, 2nd Thome Avenue, Kigwa Road, and Kiambu Road. The 20.2-kilometre bypass links Ruaka on Limuru Road to Ruiru on Thika Superhighway. It serves thousands of daily commuters between Nairobi and Kiambu counties.

The USIU-Africa Half Marathon is a flagship annual event. It brings together students, staff, professional athletes, corporate teams, and members of the public. Races include the 21km half marathon, 10km, 10km CEO and Corporate Challenge, and 5km fun run. Categories for persons with disabilities, children, and senior citizens make the event inclusive.

Prize money for the 21km elite races includes KSh150,000 for winners, with substantial awards for top finishers. The first 500 participants in selected categories receive additional incentives such as shopping vouchers, bicycles, and merchandise. Schools and companies with high participation are also recognised.

The event supports education initiatives while promoting fitness and community engagement. Organisers have staggered start times beginning at 6:30am. Normal traffic is expected to resume after midday once the course reopens.

Nairobi’s Northern Bypass has become a popular venue for such events due to its relatively wide carriageway and connectivity. Similar closures in the past have been managed with advance notice and diversions. Motorists travelling to residential estates, shopping centres, and businesses along the affected route are advised to leave earlier or seek alternatives.

The marathon highlights the growing role of universities in community development and wellness. USIU-Africa’s initiative combines sport with fundraising for education, fostering partnerships between academia, corporates, and the public.
