The construction of the Raila Odinga Mausoleum at Kang’o ka Jaramogi in Bondo, Siaya County, stands as a significant national memorial project. It is designed to preserve the legacy of one of Kenya’s most influential political figures.
Principal Secretary for Defence Dr Patrick Mariru visited the ongoing construction site on Thursday afternoon. The visit came exactly one month after the groundbreaking ceremony held in July.
The project, supervised by the Ministry of Defence, is currently at 50 percent completion. It is expected to be finished by the end of September 2026.
The mausoleum is being constructed adjacent to the resting place of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Kenya’s first Vice-President. The design incorporates significant architectural symbolism, including a distinctive pentagonal structure inspired by Raila Odinga’s political journey and the historic Pentagon era.
Progress at the site reflects a carefully coordinated construction effort. The aim is to deliver a dignified and enduring landmark that will preserve Raila Amolo Odinga’s legacy for generations to come.
It will also provide a place for reflection on his contribution to Kenya’s history and public life. Present during the inspection was the Deputy County Commissioner for Bondo, Ali Manduku.
The one-month advance from groundbreaking to the halfway mark indicates a steady pace of works. Officials expressed confidence that the September deadline will be met.
The pentagonal form is a deliberate architectural choice. It references a key period in the political history associated with the late leader and gives the structure a distinctive identity.
Location next to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga’s resting place creates a continuous family and national memorial site. Visitors will be able to pay respects at both locations within the same grounds.
Supervision by the Ministry of Defence has been presented as a factor supporting timely delivery. The technical oversight is intended to maintain standards while keeping the project on schedule.
Once complete, the mausoleum is expected to serve as a permanent national landmark. It will stand as a place of remembrance and historical reflection for both local residents and visitors from across the country.
The rapid progress in the first month after groundbreaking has been noted as evidence of coordinated site management. Remaining works will focus on completing the structure and finishing details ahead of the end-September target.
National memorial projects of this nature carry both symbolic and practical requirements. The combination of architectural symbolism and functional design is intended to meet both.
The presence of the Deputy County Commissioner during the inspection underscored local administrative support for the works. Coordination between national and county levels continues as construction advances.
