Construction work at the Kwa Jomvu stage has entered a new phase as contractors deploy heavy paving machinery to the service lanes. This section is a critical component of the wider Mombasa to Kwa Jomvu to Mariakani highway expansion project.
While the main Jomvu flyover is already finished and currently in use by motorists, the adjacent service lanes have remained under active construction. Crews are now laying fresh tarmac across these lower sections to finalize the road structure.

Surveyors are on the ground marking the boundaries for the new road alignment. The team is carefully measuring the path to ensure the final road edges match the planned design for the Jomvu intersection.
The service lane connects directly into the road heading toward Magongo, running parallel to the Meter Gauge Railway (MGR) tracks. These tracks serve the rail link between Mombasa town and the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) terminus located in Mariakani.
The design for this junction is taking shape as a standard T-junction. Engineers have opted against building a roundabout at this spot, focusing instead on a layout that allows traffic to funnel cleanly toward the Magongo area and surrounding industrial zones.
Work is currently confined to one side of the road to keep traffic moving. Commuters are using the completed upper flyover and the remaining open lanes, while laborers hand-clear the central medians that will eventually be finished with grass.
The site remains extremely dusty due to the ongoing earthworks and heavy machinery activity. Workers are spraying water to suppress dust and prepare the sub-base for the hot tarmac.
Local observations confirm that the new tarmac layer is already setting into a firm, permanent surface. The site teams appear to be pushing for a rapid completion, with plans to divert traffic onto this new section in the near future.
