A tragic road accident involving a matatu named Detat claimed six lives along Enterprise Road opposite KCB Bank in Nairobiβs Industrial Area late on Wednesday night. Several other passengers were injured and had to be rescued from the wreckage.
The vehicle, operating on the Komarock 19C route, lost control and overturned near the Dar es Salaam Roundabout around 8pm. Emergency responders and members of the public rushed to the scene to pull survivors from the mangled vehicle.
In the wake of the crash, a video shared widely on social media has left many heartbroken. It shows a young woman, one of those who died in the accident, in a light-hearted moment inside the matatu. She is seen flashing finger signs at the camera, smiling just minutes before the fatal incident.

Sammy Ondimu, who shared details with the media, described the pain of losing such young lives. βItβs so painful losing such a young soul,β he wrote, echoing the grief felt across Nairobi.
The young woman is reported to have died on the spot. Her final recorded moments have triggered an outpouring of sorrow online, with many Kenyans expressing shock at how quickly life can end on the roads.
Authorities have launched investigations into the cause of the crash. Early indications point to possible reckless driving and dangerous manoeuvres. The incident has renewed calls for stricter enforcement of traffic rules in the matatu sector.

Road safety advocates highlighted ongoing concerns over speeding, overloading, and risky behaviour common in Nairobiβs public transport. βRoad safety is not a suggestion; it is a responsibility,β one commentator noted. βWe continue losing young lives on our roads because of preventable mistakes.β
The bodies of the deceased were taken to the Nairobi City Mortuary. Families have begun the difficult process of identification and making burial arrangements.
This latest tragedy adds to a worrying trend of serious matatu accidents in the capital. Enterprise Road, a busy corridor connecting industrial zones, has seen multiple incidents in recent years.
Public transport operators and drivers face renewed pressure to prioritise safety over speed. Residents and campaigners are urging stronger measures to curb dangerous practices that continue to claim lives.
