Preparatory work continues on the Northern Corridor project while it remains at the feasibility study stage.

The National Treasury has confirmed that construction of the Mau Summit-Eldoret-Malaba Expressway is expected to commence by June 2027. The 237-kilometre project remains at the feasibility study stage.

The confirmation was made during the seventh meeting of the Interagency Project Steering Committee chaired by Treasury Principal Secretary Chris Kiptoo. The government reviewed preparations for the expressway.

According to the Treasury, the committee noted ongoing preparatory activities for the Mau Summit-Eldoret-Malaba corridor and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to commence the project by June 2027.

The timeline is aligned with the planned commissioning of the Rironi-Mau Summit section and a directive issued by President William Ruto on the development of the Northern Corridor.

The Mau Summit-Eldoret-Malaba project is planned as a modern tolled dual carriageway connecting the Mau Summit area to Eldoret and onward to Malaba on the Kenya-Uganda border.

The project is being pursued under a Public-Private Partnership model. The government seeks to use private capital to finance and develop major infrastructure projects while reducing pressure on public finances.

Principal Secretary Kiptoo said the government was focused on resolving the remaining issues affecting the wider road programme and ensuring that implementation remains on course.

β€œOur priority is to resolve outstanding issues, strengthen coordination and accelerate implementation to ensure these strategic road projects are delivered efficiently and sustainably,” Kiptoo said.

The steering committee has directed all responsible government institutions to urgently address outstanding issues within agreed timelines and the established implementation framework.

The Mau Summit-Eldoret-Malaba expressway forms part of efforts to upgrade the Northern Corridor, a key trade route linking the Port of Mombasa to Kenya’s western border and neighbouring countries.

Once completed, the project is expected to reduce travel times, ease congestion, improve road safety and support the movement of goods across the region.
