A senior detective died instantly and a county politician was hospitalised when a runaway lorry sparked a major collision that left wreckage strewn across one of Kenya's busiest roads.

Nyandarua County Criminal Investigations Officer John Rioba lost his life on the spot in a multi-vehicle crash at Karai along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway on Monday afternoon. Uasin Gishu MCA Regina Chumba suffered chest injuries and was taken to hospital.

Witnesses said the incident began when a truck heading towards Nakuru developed sudden brake failure. The heavy vehicle lost control and slammed into other traffic, setting off a chain reaction involving nine vehicles in total.

The pile-up brought parts of the busy corridor to a standstill as emergency crews worked to free trapped occupants and clear twisted metal from the carriageway. Images from the scene showed overturned cars and debris blocking lanes while police and members of the public assisted the injured.

Rioba, a senior officer in the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, was among those killed immediately. Chumba’s exact condition remained unknown late on Monday night. Several other people sustained critical injuries and were receiving treatment at nearby facilities.

The Nairobi-Nakuru highway serves as a vital artery linking the capital to the Rift Valley and western Kenya. It carries heavy commercial traffic daily, including long-distance lorries and passenger vehicles. Sections of the route, including areas around Karai, form part of the ongoing dualling project aimed at improving capacity and safety.

Police have opened an investigation to determine the precise sequence of events and any possible mechanical or human factors. Brake failure in heavy goods vehicles has featured in several recent serious incidents on Kenyan roads.

This latest crash adds to a troubling pattern. Only days earlier, multiple fatalities were recorded on other major routes, including the Nairobi-Mombasa highway and the Webuye-Bungoma stretch. Such incidents routinely highlight challenges around vehicle maintenance, road design pressures, and enforcement of safety standards.

Emergency responders faced a chaotic scene with damaged vehicles scattered across the road. Traffic diversions were put in place while recovery operations continued into the evening. Social media users shared graphic footage that underscored the force of the impact.

Road safety remains a pressing concern for users of Kenya’s trunk roads. The Nairobi-Nakuru corridor in particular sees frequent heavy truck movements, which place extra demands on both the pavement and driver vigilance. The current dualling works seek to address some of these long-standing issues through expanded carriageways.

Authorities have not yet released full details on the identities of all victims or the registered owner of the lorry involved. Further updates are expected once forensic examination of the wreckage and witness statements are processed.

The loss of a senior law enforcement officer in such circumstances is likely to prompt internal reviews within the police service on travel protocols for staff on public roads. For ordinary motorists, the crash serves as another reminder of the risks that persist even on well-travelled routes.
