In a breathtaking achievement of modern engineering, China has officially opened the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge to traffic, claiming the title of the world's highest bridge in the process. Located in the rugged, mountainous Guizhou Province, the colossal structure now soars an astonishing 625 meters (2,051 feet) above the Beipan River, surpassing all predecessors.
This architectural marvel has instantly revolutionized regional connectivity. The primary benefit for local communities is a dramatic reduction in commute time across the deep gorge, a difficult journey that once took nearly two hours by winding mountain roads is now completed in just two minutes on the bridge deck.
Constructed over nearly four years, the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge is a complex steel truss girder suspension bridge. With a total length of 2,890 meters and a main span of 1,420 meters, it also holds the world record for the largest-span bridge built in a mountainous area. To achieve this feat, engineers leveraged sophisticated technologies, including satellite navigation and intelligent monitoring systems, to overcome the immense challenges posed by the steep terrain and high winds. Extensive load testing, involving 96 heavy-duty trucks, ensured its structural integrity before opening.
The bridge takes the world record from another structure within the same province, the Beipanjiang Bridge. Guizhou is now cemented as a global hub for extreme-altitude infrastructure, boasting nearly half of the world’s 100 highest bridges.
Beyond its function as a vital transportation artery, the bridge is designed to be a major tourist destination. Officials are emphasizing its role in spurring economic growth in the region. Tourist amenities include a high-speed glass elevator installed in one of the support towers, which transports visitors to a cafe and lookout point hundreds of meters above the river. Plans are also underway for a glass walkway and a bungee jumping platform, transforming the bridge into a multi-functional landmark and a symbol of China's relentless commitment to modern infrastructure.
