Construction activity has intensified in Ol Kalou, as the second phase of the local Affordable Housing Project moves forward. This latest installment is a component of a larger master plan intended to deliver 2,500 homes within the capital of Nyandarua County, responding to a sharp rise in urban demand.
The current phase involves the construction of 420 housing units, which are distributed across four distinct blocks. Since work began in September 2024, the site has turned into a focal point for regional employment. Labor records indicate that approximately 250 workers are active on the site every day, providing a consistent source of income for the locals.
State officials, including Dr. Raymond Omollo, noted that the project is designed to do more than just provide shelter. The site layout incorporates a comprehensive suite of social amenities to ensure the new neighborhood is self-sustaining. This includes the integration of a kindergarten and a primary school directly within the precinct.
To support the economic needs of the incoming residents, the plan features a dedicated commercial block and a social hall for community gatherings. Developers have also prioritized long-term environmental functionality by installing structured garbage and waste management systems from the onset of construction.
The delivery of these units is the result of a coordinated effort between different arms of government. The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration is working in tandem with the State Department for Housing and Urban Development, which serves as the primary implementing agency for the works.
This partnership is a key pillar of the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda, known as BETA, championed by President Ruto. By focusing on Ol Kalou, the government aims to manage the rapid urbanization of Nyandarua’s administrative hub while simultaneously strengthening the local economy through direct procurement and labor.
The project builds on the foundations laid during Phase I, signaling a long-term commitment to high-density, well-planned residential zones. As the four blocks continue to rise, the focus remains on ensuring that the infrastructure can support the essential services required by a growing population.
Through the involvement of local administration and community structures, the project maintains a direct link to the needs of the people. This alignment ensures that the development does not exist in isolation, but rather acts as a catalyst for broader growth in the surrounding areas of Ol Kalou.
