Amazon web services to spend $1bn putting AI engineers inside customer teams

Amazon Web Services commits $1 billion to embed artificial intelligence engineers directly within customer teams to build agentic systems.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced a $1 billion investment to establish a dedicated engineering team that will place thousands of artificial intelligence specialists inside customer organisations. The initiative aims to help businesses transition from experimenting with artificial intelligence technology to using it within their everyday operations.

The new group, known as the Amazon Web Services Forward Deployed Engineering (FDE) organization, will work directly with clients to build and deploy agentic artificial intelligence systems. These systems can perform tasks and make operational decisions with limited human intervention.

According to the cloud provider, the approach will drastically compress system deployment timelines, moving projects from months to weeks or days. Embedded engineers will sit alongside customer business, technical, and security teams to build tools using client data, internal rules, and existing governance structures.

The model diverges from traditional technical consulting because engagements concentrate on functional software deployments rather than charging for billable hours. Amazon Web Services (AWS) stated that client personnel will be trained during the process to ensure organizations can independently operate and develop the software after the embedded specialists leave.

Teams within the organisation will utilize an approach termed the AI-Driven Development Lifecycle. Under this framework, artificial intelligence agents perform software development work across each phase, while human engineers oversee and verify the output before implementation.

To support the architecture, the cloud giant is creating a semantic layer within customer cloud accounts. This technology connects enterprise data sources to build a governed knowledge graph that artificial intelligence software can reference, helping organizations preserve institutional knowledge in software rather than relying solely on individual employees or external advisors.

Security protocols will be integrated into each deployment using hardware-based isolation and end-to-end encryption. All customer data will remain governed under each organization's existing internal policies and data controls.

The company is already collaborating with several enterprise clients under the new engineering framework. These early users include the Allen Institute, Cox Automotive, the National Basketball Association (NBA), the National Football League (NFL), Ricoh, and Southwest Airlines.

The initiative expands on work dating back to 2017, alongside three years of activity under the Generative AI Innovation Center, which has built custom software solutions for enterprise clients across multiple commercial sectors.
