The Ministry of Lands, Public Works, Housing, and Urban Development has clarified that Kenyans struggling to raise the initial capital for the Affordable Housing Programme may qualify for financial aid. This move targets the most vulnerable citizens who fall under the social housing category.
According to updates from the Boma Yangu platform, the assistance is specifically designed for individuals whose monthly income does not exceed KSh 19,999. Under the current framework, applicants are usually required to provide a 5% deposit of the total unit cost before an allocation can be processed.
For many low-income earners, this upfront cost has remained a significant barrier to entry. The government now states that those who qualify for social housing can apply for specific assistance to meet this 5% threshold, ensuring the program remains inclusive.
President Ruto has frequently emphasized that the housing initiative is not merely about construction, but about dignity and equity for those at the bottom of the economic pyramid. By addressing the deposit challenge, the state aims to accelerate the transition from informal settlements to formal, titled housing.
The Boma Yangu portal, which serves as the primary interface for the program, has updated its frequently asked questions to address these financial hurdles. It directs those in the KSh 19,999 and below bracket to seek support through official channels, although the specific mechanics of the fund disbursement remain tied to individual eligibility assessments.
This development comes at a time when the government is under pressure to prove that the Affordable Housing Programme is accessible to more than just the middle class. While the "Affordable" and "Market" categories cater to higher income brackets, the "Social Housing" tier is the most subsidized.
Critics have previously pointed out that even a 5% deposit can amount to tens of thousands of shillings, a sum that is often out of reach for families living hand-to-mouth. The provision of deposit assistance is a direct response to these concerns, potentially opening the doors for thousands of new applicants.
To benefit from this, interested parties must be registered on the Boma Yangu portal. The registration process requires a national identity card and details regarding the applicant's employment status and income level.
Once registered, users can select their preferred housing project and unit type. If the applicant falls within the social housing income bracket, they are then eligible to trigger the request for deposit support through the support system provided on the platform.
The government continues to roll out projects across various counties, with several sites in Nairobi, Nakuru, and Mombasa already nearing completion. This financial intervention is expected to increase the uptake of units in these areas, particularly among the urban poor who are the primary targets of the social housing tier.
