President Ruto has commissioned a new 189-unit housing project in Kisii County, announcing that the national programme has now reached 640,000 jobs created for Kenyan youth.

President William Ruto has officially laid the foundation stone for the Nyachenge Affordable Housing Project in South Mugirango, Kisii County. The development will consist of 189 residential units, forming part of a broader regional investment strategy that includes approximately 13,000 units planned across the county at a cost of KSh 18 billion.

During the site visit on Wednesday, President Ruto noted that the national Affordable Housing Programme has reached a significant scale, with 640,000 jobs currently attributed to the initiative. He stated that the programme is moving citizens from informal settlements into decent housing while simultaneously addressing youth unemployment.

The President emphasized that the shift toward vertical, high-density housing is a strategic move to protect the country's agricultural sector. By concentrating residential developments in designated urban blocks, the government intends to prevent the further subdivision of arable land, which remains critical for national food security.

Construction at the Nyachenge site in South Mugirango is expected to provide immediate opportunities for local artisans and MSMEs. This project was a key stop during the President's four-day development tour of the Kisii and Nyamira regions, which also included the launch of the Omingo Magara Bridge and various water infrastructure projects.

Government data indicates that the programme seeks to not only provide shelter but also to act as a primary driver for industrial growth. Artisans in the Jua Kali sector are being integrated into the supply chain to provide doors, windows, and other fittings for the 189 units in Nyachenge and similar projects nationwide.

For the residents of South Mugirango, the project represents a transition toward modern urban planning. President Ruto confirmed that the government remains committed to delivering on its housing promises, citing the visible progress of construction sites in every part of the country as evidence of the programme's momentum.
