The Sh1.9 billion Dho Goye Bridge connecting Siaya and Busia counties is now 75 percent complete, with the government targeting a full handover early next year after years of funding delays.
Francis Okoth, speaking for the resident engineer overseeing the project, said construction had regained momentum after the government resumed financing the previously stalled works.
The bridge broke ground in 2021 but stalled around 2022 due to financial challenges, according to Okoth. Construction resumed in earnest in 2025 once the funding issues were resolved.
Okoth said the contractor had completed the bridge girders and was now installing bearings on each span, with final setting down of the structure expected next month.
The project covers a 200 metre bridge alongside a 2.5 kilometre approach road. A 300 metre stretch of that approach road has already been finished.
Speaking during an inspection by the Siaya National Government Development Implementation Coordination Committee, Okoth said the contractor remained on track to complete the outstanding works within the coming months.
"We are already remaining with some few months, like six, seven months, to finish," he said, adding that the government had cleared the contractor's outstanding payments, removing the financial constraints that previously slowed progress.
Government Delivery Unit representative Allan Luvungu said the administration was satisfied with progress on the bridge and other development projects underway in Siaya, and expected them to be completed within their revised timelines.
Siaya County Commissioner Norbert Komora said the national government had rolled out development projects across nearly every constituency in the county, including affordable housing programmes in Alego Usonga, Bondo, Ugenya and Gem, along with new markets and student hostels.
Komora singled out the Dho Goye Bridge as one of the projects he was most pleased with, saying its completion would significantly ease movement between Siaya and Busia. He said the government was targeting completion around April 2027, ahead of the August 2027 General Election.
He added that improved connectivity would boost trade by making it easier for residents and traders to move goods and reach markets across the two counties.
Komora also said more than 8,000 households in Siaya had been connected to electricity through the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation and Kenya Power, with more connections expected by the end of the year.
Fredrick Ochieng, a local assistant chief, said residents were pleased with the bridge's progress, describing it as a vital link between the two counties, and urged the government to ensure the remaining works are completed on schedule.
Once finished, the Dho Goye Bridge is expected to cut travel time between Siaya and Busia and open new opportunities for trade along the corridor.
