The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a high-priority advisory for heavy rainfall and flash floods across multiple regions, impacting site safety and project timelines through early March.

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a formal heavy rainfall advisory, warning of significant precipitation levels exceeding 20mm within 24-hour periods starting February 25, 2026. The weather pattern is expected to persist through March 3, 2026, affecting vast swathes of the country, including the Western, Rift Valley, and Central Highlands regions.

For the construction sector, this update signals immediate risks to ongoing earthworks, foundation pouring, and structural assembly. The advisory notes that moderate to heavy rainfall will likely trigger flash floods, even in areas where local downpours have not been particularly intense, due to downstream runoff and saturated soils.

Geographical areas of primary concern include Migori, Nyamira, Baringo, Nakuru, and the Nairobi metropolitan area. Civil engineering projects in the Lake Victoria Basin and Highlands West of the Rift Valley are expected to see the most persistent conditions, with the heavy rain projected to last until the end of the validity period.

Construction managers are advised to monitor site drainage systems and secure loose materials that could be displaced by moving water. The Meteorological Department specifically highlighted poor visibility and lightning as concurrent risks, which may necessitate the temporary suspension of crane operations and high-altitude works to protect site personnel.

In the coastal region and southeastern lowlands, the intensity of the rains is expected to decrease slightly by March 1, 2026. However, the initial surge through the end of February remains a threat to transport logistics and the movement of heavy machinery on unpaved access roads.

The department has issued specific instructions for residents and workers in the mentioned counties to avoid sheltering under trees or near grilled windows to minimize lightning strikes. For site supervisors, this entails a review of grounding protocols for metal scaffolding and temporary metallic structures.

Visibility issues are also expected to impact the haulage of construction materials. Logistics firms operating along the Northern Corridor should anticipate delays, as the advisory warns of poor visibility and potential road blockages in flood-prone zones.

The advisory was addressed to various government agencies, including the National Disaster Management Unit and the Kenya Red Cross. This inter-agency coordination suggests that emergency response teams are on high alert for infrastructure failures, such as culvert washouts or urban drainage collapses.

Project stakeholders are encouraged to maintain flexible schedules during this window. The Ag. Director of the Kenya Meteorological Department confirmed that updates will be provided promptly if the weather patterns shift, but the current certainty of occurrence is rated between 33% and 66%.

Strategic sites in the North Eastern counties, including Isiolo and Marsabit, are also expected to see the rain spread into their jurisdictions. While these areas are typically more arid, the sudden influx of water increases the risk of rapid soil erosion on prepared building plots.

Following the instructions from the Meteorological Department, the following counties remain under high alert:

Migori, Nyamira, Bungoma, Busia, Kakamega, Vihiga, West Pokot, Baringo, Elgeyo Marakwet, Trans Nzoia, Nandi, Uasin Gishu, Nakuru, Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Kisi, Kericho, Bomet, Kiambu, Embu, Murang'a, Kirinyaga, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Laikipia, Tharaka Nithi, Meru, Nairobi, Narok, Kajiado, Makueni, Machakos, Taita Taveta, Kitui, Kwale, Mombasa, Tana River, Kilifi, and parts of Isiolo, Marsabit, and Garissa.
