A midnight collision near Kapiti Plains involving a passenger bus and two heavy lorries has left several transport users dead.

A fatal traffic accident involving a passenger bus and two commercial lorries along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway has left six people dead and seven others seriously injured. The early morning collision occurred near Kapiti Plains in Machakos County, severely disrupting transit operations along the vital transport infrastructure corridor.

The crash, which occurred at approximately 1:50 am, involved a heavy commercial lorry travelling from Mombasa toward Nairobi. Local authorities reported that this vehicle collided with another oncoming lorry before the Tahmeed passenger bus became entangled in the multi-vehicle wreck.

Emergency responders and local rescue teams worked through the night under challenging conditions to extricate passengers trapped inside the mangled wreckage of the bus. The impact of the crash temporarily paralysed flow on the arterial highway, causing vehicle queues that built up for several kilometres.

Police officers from the region launched immediate investigations to establish what triggered the fatal crash. Traffic police controlled the scene while emergency crews worked to clear the heavily damaged vehicles from the road, eventually restoring regular vehicle flow on the busy infrastructure network later in the morning.

According to official reports from the scene, the driver of the first commercial lorry and the bus driver died on impact. Four passengers, who were aboard the public service vehicle, also lost their lives during the initial collision, bringing the total number of immediate fatalities to six.

Seven passengers who sustained serious injuries were quickly evacuated from the wreckage by emergency medical personnel. They were rushed to Machakos Level Five Hospital (MLFH), where they are currently receiving specialized medical attention for various trauma injuries sustained during the midnight highway disaster.

Medical officials at the hospital facility confirmed that the victims were undergoing emergency treatment and monitoring. The bodies of the deceased individuals were moved to the same hospital mortuary, where post-mortem examinations will be conducted as part of the standard legal and investigative protocol.

The twisted wreckages of the passenger bus and the two lorries were systematically cleared from the highway lane. Police deployed heavy-duty towing equipment to move the remains of the vehicles to Kyumbi Police Station (KPS) for detailed mechanical inspections by transport safety regulators.

The Nairobi-Mombasa Highway serves as the primary transit artery for freight and passenger transport connecting the coastal port city to Kenya's capital. Incidents along this stretch often highlight ongoing discussions surrounding highway safety, lane dualisation, and the enforcement of night driving regulations for heavy commercial vehicles.

Local administrators and traffic commanders urged long-distance drivers to exercise extreme caution, when navigating the highway during late-night hours. Reduced visibility and driver fatigue remain significant safety concerns for logistics firms and public transport operators utilizing the national infrastructure network.

Investigations into the specific mechanical states of the involved vehicles or potential driver errors are ongoing. Law enforcement authorities stated, that a comprehensive report detailing the exact sequence of events would be compiled, when the vehicular examinations at the station are completed by safety inspectors.

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has previously designated several sections of this corridor as high-risk zones. This latest tragedy emphasizes the critical need for continuous infrastructure improvements, including better lighting and clearly visible road markings, to safeguard all night road users.
