Two Dead, 11 Injured in Lorry-Matatu Crash on Bomet-Kisii Highway

A mid-morning collision between a commercial lorry and a public service matatu has claimed two lives and left 11 others hospitalized with varying degrees of injuries. The incident occurred at the Kapmusa area along the busy Bomet-Kisii highway, a stretch known for its heavy transit traffic.

Bomet County Traffic Commander Daniel Ololngojine confirmed the details of the crash, noting that the lorry was traveling from the Kaplong direction toward Bomet town. Preliminary reports suggest the driver of the heavy vehicle lost control, causing it to veer off its lane.

The lorry subsequently crashed head-on into a matatu belonging to the Quarser Shuttle Company, which was headed in the opposite direction. The impact of the collision reduced the front section of the matatu to a wreck of twisted metal, trapping several passengers inside.

Emergency response teams and the locals rushed to the scene to extricate those stuck in the wreckage. Survivors were quickly moved to nearby medical facilities for urgent treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were taken to the local mortuary pending identification.

Road safety remains a primary concern for the Ministry of Transport, as President Ruto has previously called for stricter enforcement of traffic laws to curb the rising number of fatalities on Kenyan roads. The Kapmusa stretch, characterized by its winding descent, often requires high levels of driver alertness.

Traffic police have since towed the wreckage of both vehicles to the station for inspection. Mechanical failure or driver fatigue are among the factors being scrutinized by investigators to determine why the lorry veered off the road.

The locals have often raised concerns about the speed at which heavy-duty vehicles negotiate the corners along the Kaplong-Bomet corridor. They have called for increased signage and perhaps more frequent police checks to monitor the behavior of long-distance drivers.

Infrastructure experts often point out that while the Bomet-Kisii highway is generally well-maintained, the mix of heavy cargo transit and high-speed passenger shuttles creates a volatile environment. This latest incident highlights the persistent risks faced by commuters on the western transit circuit.

As the 11 survivors continue to receive treatment, authorities have urged motorists to exercise extreme caution, particularly when navigating sections with limited visibility or sharp gradients. The Quarser Shuttle Company has yet to release an official statement regarding the condition of their staff and passengers involved.

Investigations remain ongoing, and police are expected to provide a comprehensive report once the lorry driver and witnesses have recorded their statements. For now, the focus remains on the recovery of the injured and the safety of the remaining transport corridor.
