Mining firm targets barite processing and mineral testing facility in Kilifi, expanding local exploration for silver and lead.

Halal Mining plans to establish a barite mining and processing plant in Kilifi County, marking a major development for the coastal region's industrial footprint. The project will introduce dedicated infrastructure to process raw barite, a heavy mineral primarily used in drilling fluids, construction materials, and chemical applications.

Alongside the primary processing facility, the company will set up a modern mineral laboratory. This laboratory will assess the value and quality of other minerals present in the local geology, including silver and lead.

Mining activity involving silver and lead is not an entirely new endeavor in Kilifi County. Local operators and informal miners have previously extracted deposits across the area, but the new infrastructure seeks to formalize and structure these extraction activities under regulated commercial standards.

In tandem with the industrial setup, targeted community support investments are planned to address local infrastructure needs. The company has funded critical community projects, which include the drilling of three clean water boreholes, installation of solar lighting systems, and support for local educational initiatives.

The planned facilities are expected to streamline raw material testing and improve commercial viability for local mineral extraction. By establishing local laboratory capacity, regional mining projects can evaluate assay values directly in Kilifi rather than relying on external testing centers.

Establishing processing infrastructure within the county aligns with broader mineral sector efforts to add local value to raw deposits. Standardized laboratory analysis and industrial processing are essential steps for integrating local mineral output into regional supply chains.

The facility in Kilifi County will contribute to formalizing the region's mining practices, while laying down physical infrastructure for long-term industrial operations along the Kenyan coast.
