Peter Njagi used skills honed building public roads to create Riva Petroleum, turning a small loan into a family oil business that prioritises quality over shortcuts in a tough market.

Engineer Peter Njagi spent over 20 years working on government road projects. He later applied the same discipline to build Riva Petroleum Dealers Limited from a modest Sh45,000 sacco loan.

Njagi started his career in Nyeri as a civil engineer. He handled road and infrastructure works that gave him practical experience in project execution and cost management.

After leaving government service, he ventured into timber trading. He then moved into hardware and car imports from Japan before entering the fuel sector.

Riva Petroleum began small. Njagi leased a petrol station to raise capital and eventually purchased it as the business expanded.

His wife Dorcas, a trained paediatrician, joined to manage the finances. Their daughters, one an engineer and the other a lawyer, were exposed to the business early and now lead sections as shareholders.

The company operates petrol stations and supplies fuel as an independent marketer. Njagi insists on selling pure products without compromising on quality.

He has faced challenges common in the sector. Liberalisation brought tighter margins and increased competition, but he maintained focus on integrity and long-term growth.

Njagi draws on his engineering background for business decisions. He views resilience and innovation as essential traits for success in both infrastructure and commerce.

Beyond the company, he supports community initiatives. These include the Nakuru Christian Professionals' Centre of Hope and leadership roles promoting integrity in professional circles.

His story shows how technical skills from public works can translate into private enterprise. Many Kenyan engineers follow similar paths from government projects to entrepreneurship.

Njagi emphasises exposure for the next generation. He encouraged his daughters to gain outside experience before joining the family business full time.

The oil company continues to navigate market cycles. Njagi says business involves facing challenges, overcoming them and preparing for the next ones.

Riva Petroleum stands as an example of a family-run operation built on clear principles. The founder credits faith and consistent standards for its longevity.
