Kenya Submits Official Bid to Bring 2029 World Athletics Championships to Nairobi

Kenya has officially submitted Nairobi's bid to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships (WAC). The formal submission signals the nation's intent to bring the flagship global track and field competition to African soil.

The capital city of Nairobi is entering a highly competitive bidding process against major European sporting hubs. London in the United Kingdom, Rome in Italy, and Munich in Germany are also vying for the right to stage the event.

If selected, Kenya would host the senior World Athletics Championships (WAC) for the first time in history. A successful selection would also make Nairobi the first African city to ever host the global tournament.

The bid submission puts Nairobi's existing sports facilities and supporting public infrastructure directly under the international spotlight. Hosting a global athletics spectacle of this magnitude requires extensive venue capabilities, specialized training grounds, robust transport networks, and comprehensive hospitality accommodation.

The East African nation previously hosted major international youth events, including the 2017 World Athletics Under-18 Championships and the 2021 World Athletics Under-20 Championships at the Moi International Sports Centre (MISC) in Kasarani. However, securing the flagship senior tournament represents a significantly larger operational scale.

International sports federations require strict facility standards, including certified class-one synthetic tracks, expansive warm-up facilities, and modern broadcast infrastructure. Furthermore, urban access roads and accommodation capacity remain critical criteria evaluated during venue selection processes.

The decision on which candidate city will secure the hosting rights rests with the governing body, World Athletics (WA). Representatives will evaluate each candidate city's technical readiness, venue infrastructure, financial guarantees, and logistics capabilities before issuing a final determination.

In recent years, government officials have emphasized upgrading national sports facilities to meet strict international standards set by global bodies. Ongoing developments aim to position the country as a viable destination for major international events.

The bidding process will continue as evaluation panels review submitted documentation from all four applicant cities. Kenya now awaits further review stages alongside its European competitors as the selection process moves forward.
