Kenya Airways has confirmed that one of its aircraft experienced a tyre burst after landing safely at Cape Town International Airport on Tuesday afternoon. The incident forced the cancellation of the scheduled return flight to Nairobi.
Flight KQ784, operating the route from Nairobi to Cape Town, touched down at approximately 3:30 p.m. local time. The airline said the tyre burst occurred after the aircraft had landed.
The flight crew followed established safety procedures. All passengers and crew left the aircraft safely and were taken to the airport terminal.
In a statement, Kenya Airways said the return service, flight KQ785, had been cancelled while engineers and the technical team worked to repair the aircraft.
βAs a result of this incident, we have cancelled the return flight KQ785 as our engineers and technical team work to get the aircraft fixed,β the carrier stated.
The airline apologised to passengers for the inconvenience. It said its engineering and technical teams were focused on returning the aircraft to service.
βThe safety and well-being of our crew and guests is always our top priority,β Kenya Airways said. The statement also thanked passengers for their patience and cooperation and noted the professionalism shown by the crew.
The national carrier added that it would contact affected passengers directly to offer further assistance and arrange alternative travel where needed.
The aircraft involved is a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, according to available details accompanying the airlineβs confirmation. No injuries were reported.
Cape Town International Airport handled the arrival without further disruption beyond the cancelled return leg. Kenya Airways operates regular services on the Nairobi-Cape Town route as part of its regional network.
The incident remains under review by the airlineβs technical teams. Officials have not released additional details on the cause of the tyre burst or an estimated time for the aircraftβs return to schedule.
Passengers booked on the cancelled flight were advised to monitor communication from the airline for updates on rebooking options. Kenya Airways emphasised that safety procedures were followed throughout the event.
