Space Exploration Technologies Corporation (SpaceX) and Nvidia Corporation have announced a joint venture to build an artificial intelligence compute payload for the Starmind AI1 satellite.
The initiative intends to place data center grade hardware directly into low Earth orbit.
Each spacecraft will utilize Nvidia's Rubin graphics processing units and Vera central processing units.
The engineering design aims to bypass terrestrial bottlenecks including land scarcity, heavy power consumption limits, and complex cooling requirements.
Plans indicate that the deployed Starmind AI1 hardware will reach approximately thirty meters in height. It will feature a wingspan of roughly seventy five meters.
Peak power consumption for the facility is projected to hit two hundred and fifty kilowatts.
Solar energy will power the orbital units. Connection back to Earth will rely on high-speed laser links integrated with the existing Starlink constellation.
The long-term vision encompasses a network of up to one million satellites. Industry analysts note that engineering hurdles remain significant.
Severe radiation exposure, maintenance access, and hardware reliability pose ongoing risks for space-based computing infrastructure.
