National Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi has launched construction works on the Kanyawanga-Kwoyo-Dede-Rapogi road project in Migori County.
The project is designed to serve as a key regional corridor, connecting Rongo, Awendo, and Uriri constituencies.
The infrastructure intervention comes as the national government seeks to expand connectivity within rural and agricultural production hubs across South Nyanza.
By cutting through the three constituencies, the upgraded road alignment will establish a more direct route for agricultural produce, particularly sugarcane, which dominates local economies.
The launch follows previous procurement preparations managed by the Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA), which has overseen the planning for upgrading regional routes to bitumen standards.
Local leadership and transport operators have previously cited poor surface conditions along this link as a significant bottleneck, especially during rainy seasons when earth paths become impassable.
Engineering specifications for the link focus on upgrading the existing alignment to standards that can withstand heavy commercial vehicle traffic.
The work involves comprehensive earthworks, installation of drainage structures to mitigate seasonal flooding, and the application of a durable asphalt concrete surface course.
The completed asset is expected to lower vehicle operating costs and reduce transit times between the major marketing centres of Rongo, Awendo, and Uriri.
Cabinet Secretary Mbadi noted the logistical importance of the corridor during the site commissioning ceremony.
Better roads mean lower costs for farmers, and this specific route addresses long-standing transit delays between the sub-counties.
The Treasury chief added that funding priority remains directed toward infrastructural links that demonstrate immediate capacity to unlock domestic trade and support municipal links.
Construction crews and heavy earthmoving equipment have already deployed to the site to commence clearing, grubbing, and structural excavations along the designated right-of-way.
