Work on the Chuka Modern Market is moving forward in Tharaka Nithi County, creating hundreds of new spaces for local traders and centralizing agricultural trade within the region.

Construction of the Chuka Modern Market in Tharaka Nithi County is moving into its next phase, following the official start of works in October 2024. The project is part of a wider national effort to improve trading environments for small-scale enterprises across the country.

The facility is designed as a three-tier structure that will provide shelter and organized stalls for 373 traders. According to project specifications, the basement level will hold the largest capacity with 254 traders. The upper ground floor is designed for 113 occupants, while the first floor will host six additional units.

This development follows the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda, which focuses on empowering small-scale traders and improving national food systems. Interior Security and National Administration Principal Secretary, Dr. Raymond Omollo, noted that the market aims to provide a weatherproof environment for business operations.

By streamlining the distribution of agricultural produce, the market is expected to serve as a regional hub for trade. The project is a joint effort between the State Department for Internal Security and the State Department for Housing and Urban Development.

The residents in Chuka town have seen an immediate impact through job creation and increased demand for construction materials. Supply contracts for the build have supported local vendors, injecting capital directly into the county's economy during the construction period.

Standardizing these markets is a priority for President Ruto, who has emphasized the need for modern stalls to replace informal structures. The Chuka facility features durable roofing and secure lock-up shops to protect goods from theft and environmental damage.

Engineers on site have focused on ensuring the building meets safety and accessibility standards for both traders and shoppers. Once finished, the market will reduce the congestion currently seen in open-air trading areas around the town center.

The collaboration between security and housing departments ensures a well-managed project environment. This inter-agency approach is intended to prevent delays and ensure the facility is delivered within the projected timelines for the Tharaka Nithi community.
