President Ruto has commissioned the Ksh900 million rehabilitation of Thika Stadium, transforming the dilapidated facility into a 10,000-capacity venue ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

President Ruto has officially commissioned the upgrading of Thika Stadium in Kiambu County, a project valued at Ksh900 million. The development aims to expand the current facility to a 10,000-seat capacity, marking a transition from the aging municipal structure to a modern sporting complex capable of hosting high-level events.

The commissioning took place during the President's development tour of the region on Friday, March 27, 2026. The project is part of a wider national strategy to improve sports infrastructure before Kenya co-hosts the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations alongside Uganda and Tanzania.

The Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports has indicated that the upgraded facility will serve as a key training venue for the continental tournament. Its proximity to Nairobi makes it a strategic asset for teams requiring international-standard pitches and amenities within easy reach of the capital.

Work on the site involves a comprehensive overhaul of the existing grounds. The project scope includes the installation of an eight-lane modern running track, a standard football pitch with improved turf, and the construction of new changing rooms. A VVIP pavilion and a canopy for spectator stands are also included in the architectural plans.

The locals have previously expressed concern over potential displacement due to the construction. However, the government has maintained that the project will proceed without disrupting existing businesses or neighboring amenities, such as the public swimming pool and basketball courts located within the stadium precinct.

The Thika Stadium project joins other ongoing sports infrastructure developments in Kiambu County, including the Kirigiti and Karatu stadiums. Governor Kimani Wamatangi, who accompanied President Ruto, noted that the county is working closely with the national government to ensure the facility meets international standards.

Beyond the stadium, President Ruto inspected several affordable housing projects in Thika Town. These include the 573-unit Thika UTI project and the Thika Depot housing scheme, which consists of 412 units. The President also visited the Witeithie modern market in Juja, highlighting the government’s focus on integrated infrastructure and economic hubs.

Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya previously stated that the stadium is expected to be completed within a year. Once finished, the facility will provide a home for regional teams and serve as a center for talent development under the Talanta Hela initiative.

The investment is seen as a move to revitalize Thika’s status as a regional sporting hub. By modernizing the pitch and spectator areas, the government hopes to attract more competitive matches and commercial activity to the town, benefiting the local economy through increased footfall during match days.
