Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports Salim Mvurya has announced that the government has resolved outstanding contractor disputes delaying the Masinde Muliro Stadium in Kanduyi, Bungoma County. The move clears the way for rehabilitation and full completion by October this year.
The decision followed a consultative meeting with Bungoma County leadership. Governor Kenneth Lusaka led the county team in discussions aimed at unlocking the stalled project.
Leaders agreed to terminate the existing contract with current contractors. They also committed to settling all outstanding dues before moving forward with new arrangements.
Procurement for fresh contractors will begin immediately. The new team will focus on expediting the remaining works to meet the October deadline.
Remaining scope includes completion of the playing pitch. Changing rooms must also be finished along with installation of the remaining spectator seats.
Roofing works form another priority item. Additional critical components flagged by joint technical teams after their recent assessment will receive attention.
Once complete the stadium will serve as a key sports and talent development hub. It will benefit Bungoma County and the wider Western Kenya region.
The facility is expected to create opportunities for young athletes. It will also contribute to social and economic growth in the area through sports activities and related events.
Mvurya was accompanied at the meeting by National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula. Webuye West MP Dan Wanyama who chairs the National Assembly Sports Committee also attended.
Several area Members of Parliament and other regional leaders joined the discussions. Their presence underscored the importance of coordinated efforts to deliver the project.
The stadium formerly known as Kanduyi Stadium has faced repeated delays in its rehabilitation programme. Successive governments have sought to upgrade it to modern standards for local and regional use.
Technical assessments have guided the identification of unfinished elements. These evaluations ensure that new contractors address all priority gaps left by previous works.
The project forms part of broader national efforts to improve sports infrastructure across counties. Modern facilities support youth development programmes and community engagement activities.
Local communities have long awaited a functional stadium. Its completion will provide a dedicated venue for football matches training sessions and other sporting events.
