Construction works are advancing at the Lichota Airstrip in Migori County, where a new passenger terminal is taking shape to replace older, shed-like waiting areas.
The project is under the management of the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA), which is overseeing the transformation of the local airfield into a modern facility.
Upon its completion, the new Lichota Passenger Terminal will meet Class B international standards, with a design capacity tailored to handle up to 500,000 passengers annually.
Engineers have integrated designated processing areas into the building plans to manage traffic efficiently.
The design features entirely separate domestic and international passenger processing zones, which will streamline the movement of travelers through the building.
To facilitate direct regional connectivity to neighboring countries, the infrastructure program introduces dedicated Customs and Immigration facilities.
These border features are being coupled with an expanded 2-kilometer (2km) runway, which has been designed to accommodate larger commercial aircraft.
The upgrade has drawn direct involvement from national security organs due to its strategic position near the border.
The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration is coordinating the implementation and eventual management of the complex.
This state oversight focuses on strengthening security at entry and exit points, supporting border control operations, and managing the movement of passengers and goods.
Local authorities expect the upgraded aviation hub to stimulate commerce and attract fresh investment into Migori County.
The expanded capacity is also anticipated to enhance cross-border trade, while unlocking tourism potential across the wider regional economy.
