Kabati EPZ in Murang'a Nears Completion as Site Fencing Progresses

Construction of the Kabati Export Processing Zone in Murang'a County has reached 85 percent completion, according to Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo.

In an update on Monday, Omollo said the remaining works at the site now centre on perimeter fencing. Four modern manufacturing warehouses have already been completed to accelerate industrial activity at the facility.

Omollo described the project as a strategic national investment under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda, positioning it as the Central region's premier manufacturing and agro-processing hub.

The EPZ sits in Mitubiri, Kakuzi Ward, and reserves 500 acres specifically for manufacturing, warehousing and export infrastructure. A further 700 acres has been set aside for supporting amenities, including housing, hospitality, healthcare and education facilities.

Its location places it about two kilometres off the Nairobi-Nyeri Highway and roughly 85 kilometres from Nairobi, giving it access to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, major road networks and a nearby workforce.

Once operational, the facility is expected to host solar panel assembly, textile and garment manufacturing, and an industrial washing facility supporting apparel production.

Agro-processing and packhouse facilities are also planned for the site, intended to add value to crops grown in the surrounding region, including tea, coffee, macadamia, avocados, and various fruits and vegetables.

Omollo said the Kabati EPZ is projected to create between 15,000 and 20,000 direct jobs once it becomes fully operational.

The update on Kabati came a day after Omollo announced completion of the Ndunyu Chege Market in Gatanga, also in Murang'a County, which is now awaiting official commissioning.

That market, designed to accommodate more than 150 traders, is expected to strengthen the area's agricultural value chain by giving farmers and traders a more reliable marketplace, reducing post-harvest losses in the process.

Murang'a County has seen a cluster of infrastructure projects move toward completion in recent months, spanning manufacturing zones, markets and supporting public amenities.
