Kakamega’s Two-Pronged Strategy for Universal Health Coverage

The National Government is aggressively working hand in hand with the Kakamega County Government to fast-track the completion of the Kakamega County Teaching and Referral Hospital, a monumental undertaking designed to fundamentally enhance healthcare provision across the entire Western region. This facility is more than just a hospital; it represents a promise of better health outcomes and local access to specialized care.

Recognizing the immediate need to complete this vital project, the National Government has allocated a substantial Sh1 billion specifically to ensure that the construction finishes without further delay. This significant financial commitment is a direct response to the long-standing challenges faced by local residents who have been compelled to endure lengthy, expensive, and often painful journeys in search of specialized treatment elsewhere.

Once operational, the Referral Hospital will provide sophisticated, specialized medical care that local people deserve, effectively ending the era of having to travel far for crucial health services. This landmark infrastructure project is poised to become a central pillar of the region's public health system.

In parallel with this major infrastructure push, attention is also being paid to fortifying the human resource foundation of the healthcare sector. A recent key milestone was the official opening of the Malava Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) situated in Malava, Kakamega County. The mission of this newly established institution is singularly focused on training and graduating the next generation of highly skilled healthcare professionals.

These future clinicians, nurses, and technicians will form the core workforce crucial for anchoring the comprehensive implementation of the national Universal Health Coverage (UHC) agenda. Their skills will be vital in sustaining the nation’s ambitious march toward guaranteeing a healthier and more dignified future for all Kenyans, ensuring equity in health access. 

This two-pronged strategy ensures that state-of-the-art medical facilities are fully supported by a constant supply of qualified, locally trained personnel.
